With reference to the text, Carter advised his audience to dismiss any distinction in gender: ‘Change but the sexe and make it woman, or take the word in its full latitude as it comprehends the woman’.

Fellow-minister Nicholas Guy eulogized and praised Gouge’s wife Elizabeth: ‘she most prudently and prouidently ordered the affairs of her house, whereby hee [her husband] had the more leisure to attend his publike function’ (Pieties Pillar, 1625). Such rhetoric, however, should not lead to the conclusion that women’s piety was a private matter relegated to a separate sphere.
