The very use of the term “eating disorders” is representative of a formist worldview. As described previously, formist approaches emphasize the classification of events with similar features.

Although these beauty ideals are shared by many, individuals who struggle with disordered eating tend to hold them rigidly. Clients at less extreme stages might be able to see logically that other body shapes can be beautiful or that people can be loved or have power without being beautiful. For example, an individual who grows up in a highly controlled environment, such as an institution, may have very little sense of herself outside of salient contextual variables like the time of day. ” She may eat green Jell-O, not because she loves it, but because it’s what’s being served. This individual has great difficulty articulating what she wants for lunch, let alone contacting who she is or the perspective where she can see all of who she is and could be.
