For Adler, psychosomatic pain was an expression of jealousy and desire; insomnia, of ambition; gynaecological troubles, of the woman’s masculine protest. But interpreting abdominal pain or thoracic oppression as defences against pregnancy would mean, in our view, going much too far without additional specific indicators in a psychotherapy case to warrant such a conclusion.

Neurosis’ is used for everything else and thus represents a more loose categorisation of distress. Today, the terms ‘neurosis’, and also to a certain degree that of ‘psychosis’, are used less frequently in discussion of psychopathology because psychologists and psychiatrists have refined and developed the taxonomy of mental disorders since the inception of Individual Psychology. Instead of neurosis, we would probably talk of ‘psychological disorders’ or simply ‘psychological problems’. The current classification systems, such as the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-IV) developed by the American Classical Adlerian Psychology 33 Psychiatric Association (1994), have elaborated more precise diagnoses based on the patient’s symptoms.

But the neurotic cling to their fictions like drowning people; they confer on them a reality that does not correspond to them (dogmatically maintaining them rather than changing them). Or they even try to make them real, which would, in an Adlerian view, correspond to psychosis. We have now come to the point to explain the concepts of neurosis and psychosis in greater detail.
